A Simple Message
Perception is Everything
This is a fairly common mantra in education, business and politics today, stemming in part from current research in brain function. Brain research has identified the amygdala as a center of strong emotion, in particular fear, whereas the hippocampus has been associated with learning and memory. One learning construct resulting from this information suggests that learning / memory cannot happen in the presence of fear. For this reason, many educational programs focus on the environment; making the student feel comfortable and safe as a prerequisite to learning. Another less touted implication for social engineering is this: keep people afraid and they can’t effectively use their intellect.
Promoting superficial perceptual awareness as a goal is an affront to the dignity and individuality of people; it defines us solely as animals with limited and predictable responses. This ideology creates a foundation for manipulation, for it holds that individuals respond only to what they see and hear, with no capacity for inner reflection. It allows for control of others by tapping into their feelings or emotions…which are among the most primitive of human behaviors. In our economic system, fear sells many things like medicine, insurance and a variety of products intended to protect our loved ones from harm. Politicians use fear-inducing rhetoric to sell their policies, influence voters’ choices, and to undermine the influence or status of people that oppose them.
The good news is that we are more than just physical bodies; we are spirits as well, by nature of our God-given souls. We are also given intellect, which allows us to consider and choose our path in life… the basis of free will. I believe that people living under the influence of God (Christians) are able to react differently than scientists predict. In simplest terms, God is love, and perfect love casts out fear. By accepting God and living in His love, some individuals are able to discern the truth and reject the influence of businessmen and politicians. Perhaps this is why Christians are targeted by those that would assert control through fear.
Fruits of Injustice
I have a sneaking suspicion that the recent jury findings for acquittal of C. Anthony are just another symptom of a society with weakened values.
People have become accustomed to “looking away” from anything displeasing, so as to avoid making a moral decision. The progressive left has worked steadily to chip away the value of moral authority, ironically by judging it to be unfair and lacking in compassion. They have spent much energy depicting folks that have religious convictions and act on them as ignorant. What they have succeeded in creating is an environment where a person’s motives for action are more significant than the action itself.
In this way, the enlightened can look at a killer as the victim of a dysfunctional family, instead of seeing an individual guilty, at the very least, of neglect. These damaged individuals become the focus of sympathy, no longer subject to justice. We are, in effect, being told that we are no longer responsible for our actions…that if the excuse is good enough, there will be no consequences.
I’ll wager that hell is full of compassionate progressives.
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin. ~ Mother Teresa
Out of this World
My family knows me as the slightly crazy lady that has been “getting ready” for disaster since the Y2K scare. I started a pantry back then, put together an emergency bag, and have gathered necessities together where I can get to them fairly quickly. It occurred to me recently that I almost forgot one basic part of my emergency plan… the role of God in all this. God is love, and perfect love casts out fear… so what is my problem? Then it hit me… I’ve been depending exclusively on myself, and not my Savior. How will I be able to proclaim God’s provision for me and those I love, if I never acknowledge that HE will care for me and mine? All my preparations, however worldly-wise, will never accomplish what God has in store for me.
The admonition to “be in the world but not of the world” has been bouncing in my head often, these days. I’ve been busy lately; too busy to follow daily news disasters, to play on Facebook, or even write this blog. Yet I’ve never felt more at peace, more connected to God in prayer. I’ve started praying the rosary again… haven’t for years, but it seems appropriate somehow, even necessary. I check out the daily scripture readings at USCCB, and have begun looking for Catholic reading material… starting with a piece by G K Chesterton called Orthodoxy. Now that doesn’t mean that I’m not reading Nora Roberts, or watching my favorite shows (love NCIS)…. just that I’m making time for my spiritual self, with some interesting results:
I’ve noticed that when politicians do stupid things now, I pray for them, thus avoiding bouts of angry ranting. I am saddened, not annoyed, by CINOS that twist God’s word to fit liberal agendas. Most noticeably, the sense of “high alert” that had become an integral part of my world view, has diminished somehow into a more prudent vigilance.
It feels like the time for sounding the alarm, for sending out warnings has passed…. like the quiet before a storm when you check your windows, bring in any perishables, and prepare for what is coming. And yet I have an inner certainty that everything will be all right….

Keeping the Faith
A recent article in a blog I follow focused on the anguish of a jewish mother because her teenage son declared himself to be an atheist. Unfortunately, this is an all too common occurrence. There is a generation of young people who are turning away from God, and many adults are left wondering how this could happen.
Society has pressed us to restrain our declarations of faith. How can we expect children to consider faith in God as precious when religious symbols are demeaned, and participation in religious services like mass are mocked by society?
Schools up the ante by portraying as myth all beliefs that are not scientifically observable. How can children begin to appreciate the miracle of the unseen if they are taught in our schools to respect only what math or science can confirm?
Our politicians have replaced the moral guidelines once taught in Church with a new set of rules called political correctness for us to live by. Can we really be surprised when today’s youth choose this popular code of behavior that rejects whatever may be painful or inconvenient to anyone? Why would they even consider choosing a lifetime of spiritual struggle when the world offers them a secular message that is so much easier to accept?
In the earliest days of Christianity, the Good News was a message of hope, an answer to the most profound questions of life. Salvation was humbly received with gratitude and joy. Today people tend to choose the easy way over God’s Way. Little wonder that so many people are confused, depressed, and frustrated.
The people of God will overcome the anxiety, oppression, and chaos of this world when they turn again to Him. Seek the still, small voice of the Creator. Let Him refresh, renew, and strengthen your spirit so you can face the battles of the day, and be victorious!
